The Piano Lab Ltd
Frequently Asked Questions
How many children are in a group class?
Each class consists of up to 8 children, ensuring a focused and engaging learning environment. In our piano sessions, one teacher is assigned to every two children, providing personalised attention and support.
How do group classes accommodate children working at different levels?
Our group classes are designed to cater to children at various skill levels. Each child progresses at their own pace through their workbooks, allowing them to develop their skills steadily. They use headphones with splitters, enabling the teacher to listen and provide individualized feedback on their playing. We place a significant emphasis on reading music, helping children understand musical notation and enhancing their overall musical comprehension.
What happens if my child misses a lesson?
If your child misses a lesson, they can attend a makeup lesson on a different day, subject to availability. Please contact us to arrange this, as availability is not guaranteed. We strive to ensure that every child gets the opportunity to catch up on missed lessons and continue their piano studies without interruption.
Do you put children through graded exams?
Yes, we offer the option for children to take graded exams, but only if they are happy to participate. We believe in fostering a love for music, so we also welcome students who simply want to enjoy the learning experience without the pressure of exams. Our approach is flexible and tailored to the individual goals and preferences of each child.
Are lessons term-time only?
Yes, our lessons are available only during term-time. This ensures that children can benefit from a structured and consistent learning schedule, while also enjoying their school holidays. However, we do offer lessons during Summer Holidays to those who are keen to continue.
How are payments made?
Payments are made by direct debit at the beginning of every month. After your child's first lesson, we will send a direct debit mandate form via email for you to complete. This convenient payment method ensures that your child's lessons are secured each month without the hassle of manual payments.
How long are lessons?
Our lessons are 60 minutes long, providing a comprehensive learning experience. Children spend 30 minutes in The Piano Lab, where they focus on practical playing skills, and an additional 30 minutes in The Theory Lab, where they deepen their understanding of musical concepts and notation. This balanced approach ensures well-rounded musical development.
What days/times are lessons available?
Lessons are available Monday to Friday between 3:30 PM and 7:30 PM. We offer a range of time slots to accommodate different schedules, making it easier for parents to find a convenient time for their child's lessons.
Can parents attend lessons with their child?
Unfortunately, we do not have space for parents to attend the lessons. Additionally, our group classes are designed to encourage children to make friends, build confidence, and develop independence. If parents want to stay updated on their child's progress, we provide a homework app with two-way communication, allowing for regular updates and feedback.
What age can my child start?
Children can start their musical journey with us from the age of 3. Our Intro to Music Program is designed to introduce young children to the joys of music in a fun and engaging way, laying a strong foundation for future musical development in The Piano Lab.
Do you offer discounts for siblings?
Yes, we offer a £10 discount for siblings. This makes it easier for families to enrol multiple children in our classes and enjoy the benefits of a shared musical experience.
What piano do you recommend to buy?
We recommend that students have a full-sized 88-key digital piano with weighted keys. This type of piano provides a realistic playing experience and helps students develop proper technique and finger strength, which are essential for their musical growth.
Do you offer trial lessons?
Yes, we offer trial lessons so that children can experience our teaching approach and environment before committing. This allows them to get a feel for our classes and ensures that they are comfortable and excited to begin piano lessons with us.
What if my child has no prior musical experience?
No prior musical experience is required to join our classes. Our lessons are designed to accommodate beginners as well as those with musical background. We provide a supportive and nurturing environment where every child can thrive and develop their musical skills at their own pace.
How can I track my child's progress?
We use a homework app with two-way communication, allowing you to track your child's progress and stay updated on their learning journey. The app provides regular updates on your child's achievements and areas for improvement, ensuring that you are always informed and involved in their musical development.
